Members of the Samyukta Kisan Morcha (SKM) on Monday staged tractor marches in multiple locations across Punjab in order to bring attention to their demands surrounding the Electricity (Amendment) Bill, 2025 and other issues.

Members of the Samyukta Kisan Morcha (SKM) on Monday staged tractor marches in multiple locations across Punjab in order to bring attention to their demands surrounding the Electricity (Amendment) Bill, 2025 and other issues.

The SKM had called for tractor marches on Republic Day for the second time since thousands of farmers protested against the now-repealed farm laws and stormed the Red Fort in New Delhi in 2021, busting through barricades and clashing with police officers. Monday’s demonstrations and demands were focused on the three new laws being proposed by the government, the MGNREGA, and a minimum support price (MSP) for agricultural products.

In Hoshiarpur district, the Doaba Kisan Committee held a tractor march in Mukerian. The march began at the Grain Market in Bhangala and stopped at Bhangala Chungi and Mata Rani Chowk, as well as the Sugar Mill and the SDM office, before returning to the Grain Market in Bhangala.

Avtar Singh Bobby, president of the Mukerian chapter of the Doaba Kisan Committee, led the march.

In Dasuya, Hoshiarpur, farmers on tractors marched through Verka Chowk, SDM Chowk, Grain Market, Chungi Chowk, and Balagan Chowk, ending near Basra Hospital on Miani road, while at Garhdiwala, they proceeded through the bus stand and Sarhala Morh to reach Guru Aasra Ghar at Bahga village.

A comparable rally took place at Tanda, featuring farmers operating over 60 tractors who paraded under the guidance of Doaba Kisan Committee president Jangveer Singh Chauhan.

Speaking to farmers at Tanda-Urmur, Chauhan and committee general secretary Prithipal Singh Guraiy criticized the Centre for its “anti-farmer” policies, alleging that it is encouraging the privatization of cooperative bodies.

They also cautioned about the excessive pricing of fertilisers, calling for firm measures against dishonest sellers.

In Moga, a march was taken out in the Dharamkot area, in which Sukh Gill from Bharti Kisan Union (Totewal), Surat Singh from Hind Kisan Sabha, Sukhwinder Singh Bahramke from BKU (Rajewal), and Mandeep Singh from BKU (Punjab) took part.

The tractor marches concluded without any untoward incident, officials said.
