A new controversy has started in Punjab over a web series titled “Lawrence of Punjab.” The show is based on the life of the famous prisoner Lawrence Bishnoi. The Punjab Congress has criticized both the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and the BJP for allowing this show to be made, calling it a “glorification of gangster culture.”
Arshdeep Kadyal, a lawyer for the Punjab Congress, spoke at a press meeting today. He asked why the government is staying silent while a show about a gangster is being prepared for release.
“The AAP government says they are fighting a war against gangsters,” Kadyal said. “But at the same time, a series about Lawrence Bishnoi is coming out. This shows the government is failing to keep its promises.”
Concerns for Punjab’s Youth
The Congress party is worried that such shows will have a bad influence on children and young people. They believe that showing gangsters as “heroes” on screen will encourage more crime in the state.
Kadyal also mentioned that the title “Lawrence of Punjab” is insulting to the state. He said that Punjab should be known for its brave soldiers and hardworking farmers, not for gangsters.
Justice for Sidhu Moosewala
The party also raised the issue of the late singer Sidhu Moosewala. They reminded the public that Moosewala’s family is still waiting for full justice. They criticized the government for not stopping a show that features someone linked to the singer’s murder case.
The Punjab Congress has decided to take the matter to court. They are filing a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) in the Punjab and Haryana High Court to stop the series from being released.
They argued that while the government often bans songs or movies that talk about real Punjab issues, they are being “soft” on this gangster series.
The web series is expected to be released on April 27. So far, the state and central governments have not commented on the Congress party’s demands.
