Indian Woman Goes Missing During Sikh Pilgrimage to Pakistan; Search Underway

Immigration records indicate that Sarabjit Kaur was unaccounted for in the group. Her name was absent from Pakistan’s immigration records.

As per official documentation, on November 4th, the female traveler joined a party of 1,923 pilgrims to Pakistan from the Attari checkpoint in Amritsar, from where travel by shuttle is coordinated via the diplomatic shuttle arrangement for pilgrimages to religious sites.

The group, known as the jatha, was headed by the Jathedar, Giani Kuldeep Singh Gargaj, a representative from Akal Takht Sahib.

The group of 1,922 pilgrims returned to India on Thursday evening after a 10-day pilgrimage to various gurudwaras, or holy places of worship in Pakistan.

Immigration records indicate that Sarabjit Kaur was unaccounted for in the group. Her name was absent from Pakistan’s immigration records upon departure, as well as from India’s immigration records for re-entry.

Following her vanishing, intelligence organizations in India and Pakistan are attempting to locate her whereabouts.

Indian officials said to IANS that India’s mission in Pakistan has communicated with the Pakistani officials.

On November 4, Sikh pilgrims journeyed to Nankana Sahib, Pakistan for the celebration of Prakash Parv of Guru Nanak Dev Ji. However, the Pakistani officials reportedly did not permit 14 Hindu persons from Delhi and Lucknow to travel to Pakistan with the group of Sikh pilgrims.

The Union government had allowed Hindu persons to make a 10-day pilgrimage to Nankana Sahib shrine in Pakistan to commemorate Guru Nanak’s anniversary, after having denied permission just 2 weeks earlier, due to security concerns about a religious pilgrimage.

Every year, the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) sends large Sikh groups to Pakistan for pilgrimages to visit one or more of the many historical gurudwara locations relating to Sikhism; in particular for the Parkash Purb of Guru Nanak Dev Ji.
