Nine people were reported injured when a shooter fired shots at the university in Providence, Rhode Island, on Saturday.
Police on Sunday verified that an individual had been apprehended, and the previous directive for those on the Brown campus and nearby locations to take shelter was rescinded.
Providence Mayor Brett Smiley stated that seven individuals were in stable condition, with one in critical but stable condition, while another had been discharged.
According to officials, the shooter began shooting in a classroom at approximately 16:00 local time (21:00 GMT) on Saturday in the Holley engineering building located at the eastern side of Brown’s campus.
The names of the deceased or injured have not been disclosed, but Brown University President Christina Paxson informed reporters during a press conference on Saturday that all the victims, both those who were killed and those who were hurt, were students.
In a statement issued by the university on Sunday, Paxson mentioned that certain parts of the campus remained restricted while police proceeded with their investigations.
She noted that approximately 2,000 students were moved to safe areas overnight and expressed that she was “deeply touched” by the students and residents who welcomed them into their homes, Paxson stated.
“We know that no number of words can provide any level of comfort for family members who lost their child; however, we will do everything we can for those families,” she commented.
Earlier in the week, the police released video footage from a security camera of a male suspect who was seen walking away from the shooting scene in black-colored clothing. The police stated that they did not locate any firearms inside the building.
Prior to the arrest of this individual on Sunday afternoon, Police Chief Oscar Perez indicated that the police are no longer looking for any additional suspects and that they are working with the Office of the County District Attorney on collecting any additional evidence.
“We should be breathing a little easier because the city now is no longer under a shelter-in-place order,” Deputy Chief Smiley stated. “Although we have prepared ourselves for this type of event, it’s not something any community should have to prepare themselves for.”
Hundreds of federal agents and police officers were dispatched to Providence on Saturday to locate the suspect.
Addressing reporters at the White House on Saturday, President Donald Trump described the shooting as a “horrible thing.”
The assault on the Ivy League institution raises the total of mass shootings to 389 in the US this year, as reported by the Gun Violence Archive.
It characterizes mass shootings as incidents where four or more victims are killed or injured, excluding the assailant.
