Police in California have arrested a cab driver of Indian origin in connection with an alleged sexual assault on one of his passengers, a young woman.
The accused has been identified as Simranjeet Sikh Sekhon and is said to have sexually assaulted a 21 year old woman while she was a passenger in his cab in Camarillo, California. The investigation was initiated in November when the Major Crimes Sexual Assault Unit received a report related to this incident.
Investigators allege that the victim was intoxicated and fell asleep while riding in the cab and that even after the cab ride ended, Sekhon continued to drive around the city of Camarillo with the unconscious woman before sexually assaulting her.
Sekhon lives in Bakersfield and has been booked into a pre-detention facility because of the victim’s vulnerable condition, he was arrested on December 15. Sekhon made an initial appearance in court where he entered a plea of not guilty, the judge set bail at $500,000 and scheduled his next court appearance for December 29.
The police have not released any details about which cab or ride-hailing company Sekhon was employed by when the incident occurred, nor have they provided any information regarding Sekhon’s immigration status.
