Hindu woman alleges sexual assault in Bangladesh’s Jhenaidah, police probe underway

In her statement, the survivor claimed that the accused later tied her to a tree, cut her hair, and recorded the act, which was later circulated on social media.

A 40-year-old Hindu woman has alleged that she was sexually assaulted by two men in Kaliganj, a sub-district of Jhenaidah in central Bangladesh. The incident has raised concern amid recent reports of attacks on members of the Hindu community.

According to the survivor’s complaint, she had purchased a small piece of land along with a two-storey house in Kaliganj municipality about two-and-a-half years ago from a local man, Shahin, and his brother. She alleged that after the sale, Shahin began harassing her and making unwanted advances, which she repeatedly rejected.

The woman told police that on Saturday evening, when two of her relatives were visiting her home, Shahin and another man, identified as Hasan, allegedly forced their way inside and sexually assaulted her. She further alleged that the accused demanded money from her and attacked her relatives when she refused, forcing them to flee the house.

In her statement, the survivor claimed that the accused later tied her to a tree, cut her hair, and recorded the act, which was later circulated on social media. She said she was physically tortured and lost consciousness. Local residents later rescued her and took her to Jhenaidah Sadar Hospital.

Hospital superintendent Dr Md Mostafizur Rahman said the woman did not initially disclose full details of the incident, but medical examination later indicated signs of abuse.

Following the incident, the survivor lodged a formal complaint at Kaliganj Police Station, naming both accused. Jhenaidah Additional Superintendent of Police Billal Hossain confirmed that her statement has been recorded and said a detailed investigation is underway. He assured that strict legal action would be taken against those found guilty.
