Kabaddi player shot dead in Jagraon village, police launch probe

After the attack, a group of youths allegedly went to his house and claimed they had killed him, saying his body was lying in the fields.

Panic spread in Manuke village of Jagraon after a 32-year-old kabaddi player, Gagandeep Singh, was shot dead by unidentified assailants late on Sunday night. The victim was a relative of Jagraon MLA Sarabjit Kaur Manuke.

According to the police and family members, Gagandeep was shot multiple times in the fields near the village. After the attack, a group of youths allegedly went to his house and claimed they had killed him, saying his body was lying in the fields. Family members and villagers rushed to the spot and took the injured Gagandeep to the Civil Hospital in Jagraon, where doctors declared him brought dead.

On receiving information, MLA Sarabjit Kaur Manuke reached the Civil Hospital and directed the police to arrest the accused at the earliest. She said that lawlessness and gang-related violence would not be tolerated in her constituency and assured the family of justice.

The family alleged that the murder was linked to an old dispute. They claimed Gagandeep often intervened when some village youths harassed another kabaddi player, Eakam Singh, which led to resentment and eventually the killing.

Gagandeep is survived by his wife and three minor children—two daughters and a son.

SHO Kuldeep Kumar said a firing incident had been reported from Manuke village. He added that the police are recording statements of the family members and have started an investigation to identify and arrest the accused.
